Paul Sugar

Not memory singular, but plural, extending over almost forty years now. My late husband Harvey (Hart) Miller was Paul’s close friend and bridge partner when Hart and I met and married in 1975. While we lived in Chicago until 1992, Paul and Judy together with Sandi and Arny Leavitt were our closest couple friends. We shared so many happy times together: traveling to bridge tournaments – celebrating holidays – or just getting together frequently for dinner and the pleasure of each other’s company. When Hart died five years ago, Paul and Judy were so wonderfully kind and supportive to me. I’m feeling such an aching sense of loss tonight that this dear man is no longer with us. My heartfelt sympathy to Judy, his family and all of his many friends who loved and honored him as Hart and I did.

Paul was a great bridge player and, as my partner, we won lots and lots of tournaments. He was my best partner, certainly, over my long career in competitive bridge.
I remember playing with him in an International tournament where we played against Omar Sharif.
We also played in an International Invitational Mixed Pair and were surprised that our very high score was only good for a 2nd place finish. The incredible pair of Barry Crane and Kerry Shuman blew by us with a supernatural score to finish first.
I learned and sharpened my skills playing with Paul and feel very fortunate that he sat across the table from me.
